Ironwood Lumberjacks Announce Will Porter as Team Captain For the 25-26 Season

Ironwood, MI – September 9th, 2025

The Ironwood Lumberjacks are proud to announce that veteran forward Will Porter has been named the team’s new Captain for the upcoming 2025-2026 Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) season.

Porter, a native of, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, is entering his second season with the Lumberjacks after arriving via trade from the Red Lake Miners during the 2024-25 season. Porter consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, and a strong work ethic both on and off the ice last season. His commitment to the team and his strong presence in the dressing room made him the obvious choice to lead the Lumberjacks this season under a new vision of accountability and a team first culture.

General Manager and Head Coach Doug Lein expressed his enthusiasm for Porter’s appointment, “Will embodies everything you look for in a leader. He’s a tireless worker, commands respect and accountability from his teammates, and consistently puts the team first. His character and experience as veteran player will be invaluable as we build a new culture this season. We’re incredibly confident in his ability to lead the Lumberjacks.”

Upon receiving the captaincy, Porter shared his excitement: “It’s an incredible honor to be named Captain of the Ironwood Lumberjacks. I’ve grown so much as a player and person here, and I’m truly grateful for the trust that the organization is placing in me. I’m excited to lead this group of players and work towards bringing a championship to Ironwood.”

The Lumberjacks open their season with a home series against the Thunder Bay North Stars September 19 and 20, 2025. Games are played at the Pat O’Donnell Civic Center on the Campus of Gogebic Community College in Ironwood. Puck drops at 7 pm each evening.
